First of all, I had an amazing break in Washington, DC. My brother picked me up in Harper's Ferry and proceeded to spoil me rotten for two days. We spent that time at the Udvar-Hazy Center, the "annex" to the National Air and Space Museum where they house big items -- Space Shuttle Enterprise, Concorde, Enola Gay, etc. -- and do the actual restoration work on future exhibits. It was a welcome break, and I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with my brother. The steak dinner he foisted upon me was not too shabby, either. He dropped me off at the trail head on his way home and I continued north.

I arrived in Duncannon around 5:00 on Friday the 13th of May, walking under a ladder and across the path of a black cat along the way. It was a push to get here in one day from Boiling Springs -- 25 miles -- but I managed it by imagining a hamburger and fries for dinner. Oh, and hail is forecast with storms expected on Saturday.
The terrain was varied and it rained a good bit of the day. But now I have a room at
The Doyle and will "zero" Saturday and maybe Sunday.

After that, my friends from Atlanta arrive: Mark and Beth. I'm looking forward to sharing the experience with them for a short time. Bring your rain gear, guys!
Oh, and the hamburger and fries were as good as I imagined them.
Who built the boardwalk over the swamp? Park service? And yay for more photos of beautiful rocks!
ReplyDeleteVolunteers do all the work on the trail except in some parks (like The Smoky Mountains) where it's sometimes done by the park itself. Volunteer groups are coordinated by The Appalachian Trail Conservancy based in Harpers Ferry, WV.
